Please share with others.

Please tell everyone who wants organic foods.....

US House and Senate are about (in a week and a half) to vote on bill that will OUTLAW ORGANIC FARMING (bill HR 875).

There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the next 2 weeks before people realize what is happening.

Main backer and lobbyist is Monsanto - chemical and genetic engineering giant corporation (and Cargill, ADM, and about 35 other related agri-giants). This bill will require organic farms to use specific fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated by the newly formed agency to "make sure there is no danger to the public food supply".

This will include backyard gardens that grow food only for a family and not for sales.

If this passes then NO more heirloom clean seeds but only Monsanto genetically altered seeds that are now showing up with unexpected diseases in humans.

There is a video on the subject here.
And another one here

The name on this outrageous food plan is: The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (bill HR 875).

THIS IS REAL, FOLKS! PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL CONCERNED ON YOUR MAILING LISTS & CALL YOUR SENATE REPRESENTETIVES TODAY!

Get on that phone and burn up the wires. Get anyone else you can to do the same thing. The House and Senate WILL pass this if they are not massively threatened with loss of their position.... They only fear your voice and your vote.

The best thing to do is go to www.house.gov/writerep all you have to do is put in your zip and it will give you your congressperson and how to get in touch with them. When you call their office someone will answer the phone, just tell them (politely) that you are calling to express your views on HR 875. Tell them your views, they'll take your name and address and pass your comments along to the congressperson.

The following link is a list of the U.S. senators and their contact info: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfmDoniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17292554755396847872noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7070605713792923451.post-70343153492316508732009-04-03T17:27:00.008-04:002009-04-03T17:39:14.681-04:00The Treasure of Reconnecting

Its so good to see dear friends after a long absence, no?

Dare i say it is a Healing Treasure? You can refresh your memory here...

Wishes do come true (music swells in the background)!!!! A few weeks ago our dear friend Cecilia gifted me this volume while expressing her love and admiration for the denizens of the ground beneath our feet (and houses, gardens, parking lots, etc.)

In reading Stewart's book, my own admiration for the wormy-sort grew tremendously. They are an extraordinary sort - the real movers, shakers, and sculptors of the planet. His name is Andy Goldsworthy. Check out this interview with him for Time Magazine.

Here is more of his words, "I enjoy the freedom of just using my hands and "found" tools--a sharp stone, the quill of a feather, thorns. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches. I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn.

"Looking, touching, material, place and form are all inseparable from the resulting work. It is difficult to say where one stops and another begins. The energy and space around a material are as important as the energy and space within. The weather--rain, sun, snow, hail, mist, calm--is that external space made visible. When I touch a rock, I am touching and working the space around it. It is not independent of its surroundings, and the way it sits tells how it came to be there.

"I want to get under the surface. When I work with a leaf, rock, stick, it is not just that material in itself, it is an opening into the processes of life within and around it. When I leave it, these processes continue.

"Movement, change, light, growth and decay are the lifeblood of nature, the energies that I try to tap through my work. I need the shock of touch, the resistance of place, materials and weather, the earth as my source. Nature is in a state of change and that change is the key to understanding. I want my art to be sensitive and alert to changes in material, season and weather. Each work grows, stays, decays. Process and decay are implicit. Transience in my work reflects what I find in nature.""The underlying tension of a lot of my art is to try and look through the surface appearance of things. Inevitably, one way of getting beneath the surface is to introduce a hole, a window into what lies below." from here

There is a documentary on him called, "Rivers and Tides". Part of it can be seen on YouTube.

And now just a small sampling of his work. Thought it was share-worthy.

When you eat to maximize micronutrients, your body function will
improve; chronic illnesses like high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, and
high cholesterol will likely disappear; and your youthful vigor will last
into old age. Heart disease and cancer, the major killers of modern
societies, would fade away and be exceedingly rare occurrences if the
population adopted a cancer-preventive diet style and lifestyle. And we
would hardly ever see any overweight children.
Maintaining a population of normal-weight individuals can be efficiently accomplished only by eating more high-nutrient foods, foods with higher nutrient-per-calorie ratio. The foods with the most nutrients per calorie are vegetables and beans.
Vegetables are also very rich in protein and calcium. Most vegetables have
more protein per calorie than meat and more calcium per calorie than milk.
Nobody can consume too little protein by eating less animal products and
substituting vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds.

The focus on the importance of protein in the diet is one of the major reasons we
have been led down the wrong path to dietary suicide. We were taught to equate
protein with good nutrition and have though animal products, not vegetables,
whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds, are our best source of protein. We bought
a false bill of goods, and the dairy-and-meat-heavy diet brought fourth a heart
attack and cancer epidemic.

If we hear something over and over since we were young children, we just accept it as true. For example, it is myth repeated over and over that plant proteins are "incomplete" and need to be "complemented" for adequate protein. In fact, all vegetables and grains contain all eight of the essential amino acids (as well as the 12 other nonessential ones).1 While some vegetables have higher or lower proportions
of certain amino acids than others, when eaten in amounts to satisfy one's
caloric needs, a sufficient amount of all essential amino acids are
provided. Because digestive secretions and sloughed-off mucosal cells are
constantly recycled and reabsorbed, the amino acid composition in the
bloodstream after meals is remarkably complete in spite of short-term
irregularities in their dietary supply.
It is interesting to note that peas, green vegetables, and beans have more protein per calorie than meat.
But what is not generally considered is that foods that are rich in plant protein are generally the foods that are richest in nutrients and phytochemicals. By eating more of these high-nutrient, low calorie foods we get plenty of protein, and our bodies get flooded with protective micronutrients simultaneously. Animal protein does not contain antioxidants and phtyochemicals, plant protein does. Plus, animal protein is married to saturated fat, the most dangerous type of fat.

Protein Content From
Selected Plant Foods
Food Grams of Protein
Almonds (3 oz) 10
Banana 1.2
Broccoli (2 cups) 10
Brown Rice (1 cup) 5
Chickpeas (1 cup) 15
Corn (1 cup) 4.2
Lentils (1 cup) 18
Peas--frozen (1 cup) 9
Spinach--frozen (1 cup) 7
Tofu (4 ounces) 11
Whole wheat bread (2 slices) 5

Even a professional body builder who wants to build one-half pound of extra muscle
per week only needs about an extra seven grams per day over a normal protein
intake. No Complicated formulas or protein supplements are needed to get
sufficient protein for growth, even in the serious athlete. Exercise
increases hunger, and as the athlete consumes more calories to meet the
demands of exercise, they will naturally get the extra protein they need.
Many world-class athletes thrive at world-class competitions on vegetarian
and vegan diets.
When you reduce or eliminate animal protein intake and increase vegetable protein intake, you lower cholesterol radically. Vegetables, beans, and nuts and seeds are all rich in protein, and they also have no saturated fat or cholesterol. But the clincher is that they are higher in nutrients than any other foods. We must structure our diets around the foods that supply the most micronutrients.
The cholesterol-lowering effects of vegetables and beans (high protein foods) are without question. When adult subjects are feed a vegetable-based diet, cholesterol levels drop radically, much more than with the most powerful cholesterol-lowering
drugs.2 These foods also contain an assortment of heart disease-fighting
nutrients independent of their ability to lower cholesterol, and they fight
cancer, too.

1. There are beautiful and unusual (plus plenty of usual and not-so-beautiful) volumes a-plenty. The sale lasts a week and as it gets closer to the end, the prices drop. By the last day you can get a box of books (as long as you can carry it) for 4 bucks! Shocking, i know...

We were out of town for most of the brouhaha. But at 3pm on Sunday, my mother reminded me that it was the last day. My little sprout and i headed on over ('cause we don't have enough books as it, and you never know when you are going to find a gem). By the time we arrived there was an anouncement that the booksale would end in 15 minutes.

Needless to say there was a MAD BOOK DASH made by yours truly. In that short time span i managed to wrangle in 28 books...yes, i am serious...28 books.

my offspring overwhelmed by the fruits of his momma's Mad Book Dash!!!

Here is the bounty of our library sweep (and my analysis after actually looking at the books at home):

1. Guide to New Medicines of the Mind - ed. by Jeffery Berlant and Ira Extin (this was a dud for me, i thought it was going to be cool alternative techniques for caring for the mind. instead, it is a very pharma-centered volume.)

2. The Tale of a Pond - by Henry b. The only known visual record of this unwitting pioneer’s existence is an engraving done that same year by the Dutch physician and anatomist Nicolaes Tulp. A leading figure of the Enlightenment with its emergent emphasis on objective observation and realistic representation, Tulp sat day after day in the private menagerie of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, and proceeded to compose one of the more surreal depictions of a chimpanzee imaginable. The creature — seated atop a boulder with its mostly hairless torso and limbs, tapered elfin hands and feet, and sweetly smiling face — looks like a potbellied forest nymph dreamily sleeping off a good drunk. Not a chimpanzee so much as an ape-human hybrid.

The fact that Tulp, a man of science, refused to let his hand depict what his eyes were seeing goes to the heart of the threat that the chimpanzee’s near-humanness has long posed to our consciousness. By depicting a nymphlike creature, he reinforced an age-old anthropocentric conception of humanlike apes as mythic beings, fearsome man-beasts, living cautionary tales against our own often beastly and rapacious tendencies.

Tulp’s willful distortion may seem laughable now, something that we modern-day humans have advanced beyond, but we need look no further than Travis to dispel that conceit. His tragic end is a sadly familiar occurrence within today’s equally distorting framework of trying to coerce evolution in a direction it didn’t quite go for chimps, by making them be us: living on our turf and terms, dressing in our clothes, acting in our films and commercials, suffering in our research labs.
While researching a book about my days living in a retirement home for former chimp actors (chimps work as actors only until about the age of 6, after which they become too strong and willful; they then spend the rest of their lives, often 40 to 50 more years, behind bars), I happened to visit Mike and Connie Casey, the breeders who originally sold the baby Travis to Sandra Herold and who raise and rent out their own chimps for commercials and children’s birthday parties.

Connie Casey saw Travis’s mother, Suzy, shot dead back in 2001 when this chimp, too, escaped and got into a tussle with a dog. In 2005, four former chimp actors undid the lock of a retirement home known as the Carson Center for Chimps (as in Johnny Carson) on the grounds of a roadside animal attraction called Zoo Nebraska. As patrons ran for cover, three chimps were killed. One, named Ripley, managed to return to the Carson Center and close himself back in.
Six months before that incident, two former chimp actors who had grown up and trained with Ripley escaped their enclosure at a retirement sanctuary in Southern California and badly mauled a visitor much in the same way that Travis did Ms. Herold’s friend.

Chimps are, like us, given to occasional violent outbursts, but they have exponentially greater strength. Chimps also have, like us, minds enough to lose and memories that can hasten the process. Wild chimps “recruited” by poachers for entertainment watch as their mothers are gunned down — the only way a chimp mother would ever relinquish a child. Chimps born in captivity are spared that experience, but they suffer the same premature separation from their mothers, isolation from their normal social groups and often mistreatment from trainers and keepers, all traumatic events that have been shown to cause deep psychological scarring and, as in human beings, can lead an animal to overreact to the slightest stimuli: the look in someone’s eye, the color of someone’s hair or, as with Ms. Herold’s friend that day, hair done up in an unaccustomed style. These are, in short, deeply conflicted beings, evolutionary anomalies that only we could have created: chimps with names and yet no recollection of trees.

The most tragic example of this is Lucy, who lived in the late 1960s and early ’70s. Raised from infancy to age 10 as a human child by the psychologist Maurice Temerlin and his wife, Jane, Lucy made her own meals, mixed her own cocktails, flipped through magazines, slept on soft mattresses, raised a pet cat, learned sign language — and had no contact whatsoever with other chimpanzees. By the time she reached sexual maturity, however, she became more and more difficult to handle, and the Temerlins decided they had to let Lucy go.

They chose to send her to a place that was the complete opposite of what she knew, a refuge that reintroduces captive chimps into the wild. Lucy, it will perhaps come as little surprise, struggled mightily. She refused to socialize with the other chimps, to climb trees, forage for food, make nests. She took to waiting beneath trees for the others’ crumbs to fall.

Eventually, Lucy adopted an orphan baby chimp and mothered him until he died three years later of a stomach parasite. She herself barely survived a bout of hookworm, then began to show enough positive signs of socializing with the others that they were all left for a time to their own devices. A year later, however, Lucy’s skeleton was found near the shores of the island refuge, without, some reports said, her hands or feet. The cause of her death isn’t known, but speculation is that Lucy, always the first to greet human visitors, one day unwittingly approached a group of poachers, who readily seized upon their overeager prey.

Lucy, Travis and all the others died for the same reason that Tulp couldn’t draw the actual being seated before him: our ongoing inability to see animals outside our own fraught frame of reference. The chimp that Tulp, in fear of science, preserved as a mythic human, Temerlin tried to make a human, in science’s name. Lost in the shuffle of either agenda were the animals themselves, creatures we still can’t regard and respect for what they are and just leave alone.

Charles Siebert, a contributing writer for The Times Magazine, is the author of the forthcoming “The Wauchula Woods Accord: Toward a New Understanding of Animals.”
Doniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17292554755396847872noreply@blogger.com0
